Why Your Causal Intuitions are Corrupt: Intermediate and Enabling Variables

چکیده
Abstract When evaluating theories of causation, intuitions should not play a decisive role, even in flawlessly-designed thought experiments. Indeed, no coherent theory causation can respect the typical person’s redundancy (pre-emption) experiments, without disrespecting their threat-and-saviour (switching/short-circuit) I provide deductively sound argument for these claims. Amazingly, this assumes absolutely nothing about nature causation. also second argument, whose conclusion is stronger: causal are thoroughly unreliable. This proceeds by raising neglected question: what respects information intermediate and enabling variables relevant to reliable judgment?

Why are recessions good for your health?
A series of influential papers by Christopher J. Ruhm (2000, 2003, 2005, 2008) documents that recessions are “good for your health”—or, more specifically, that state-level mortality rates are strongly procyclical. The magnitude of the correlation is economically meaningful: a typical estimate from the literature suggests that a 1 percentage point increase in a state’s unemployment rate is assoc...
متن کاملAnalysing Causation in Light of Intuitions , Causal
The aim of this paper is to provide an account of causation that is compatible with both common sense intuition and science. In the next section, I briefly rehearse the most important philosophical strategies for analysing the concept of causation. Then I investigate, in the third section, criteria of correctness for a philosophical theory of causation. In the fourth section, I review some impo...
متن کاملWhat Intuitions Are Like1
Some philosophers think that intuitions are a source of justification, and in particular a source of justification for beliefs about abstract matters, such as numbers, shapes, freedom, truth, and beauty. Other philosophers are more skeptical. They doubt that intuitions are a source of justification for beliefs about abstract matters, though they might concede that intuitions are a source of jus...
متن کاملTHE CULTURAL TRANSMISSION OF FAITH Why innate intuitions are necessary, but insufficient, to explain religious belief
The cognitive science of religion integrates insights from diverse scientific disciplines to explain how people acquire, represent and transmit religious concepts. This perspective has led to a fruitful research program on the naturalistic origins of religion. However, it has thus far not directly addressed a key component of religion: faith or committed belief. The present review proposes a fr...
متن کاملWhy Your Body Can Jog Your Mind
Philosophical tradition influences the way we think about body and mind (Rogers, 1936). We have a body to move around and a mind to think and to learn (Descartes, 1637). At school, we sit, listen, and read, but we are not allowed to move. However, cognitive science has shown that our body is tightly linked to the mind (Wilson, 2002; Pecher and Zwaan, 2005; Gärtner, 2013). In this paper, we prov...
